After four seasons at Neosho County Community College, Head Men's Basketball Coach Taylor Shaffer is taking the next step in his coaching career as he accepts a new opportunity at McCook Community College. While the Panthers will undoubtedly miss his leadership, Shaffer leaves Chanute having played a significant role in elevating the men's basketball program. His tenure was marked not only on the court but also by a commitment to developing student-athletes and creating a culture built on toughness, accountability, and teamwork.
When Shaffer arrived at Neosho County in 2022, he inherited a program in one of the nation's most competitive junior college conferences. From day one, he emphasized defense, discipline, and player development, laying the foundation for long-term success.
His impact became evident during the 2023-24 season when the Panthers achieved their first winning record in nearly a decade. Under Shaffer's guidance, Neosho finished 16-14 and established itself as one of the premier defensive teams in the country. The Panthers ranked among the nation's top defensive programs, setting school records for points allowed and points allowed per game.
Beyond the wins and losses, Shaffer helped develop individual talent at an impressive level. During his time at Neosho, the Panthers produced multiple all-conference performers, including Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference standout Isaiah Howell.
Equally important was the culture Shaffer built within the program. Players consistently spoke about the standards he established and the relationships he fostered. He emphasized personal growth, academic success, community involvement and accountability alongside basketball development, preparing student-athletes for opportunities beyond Neosho County Community College.
Athletic Director
Dr. Riann Mullis praised Shaffer's dedication to both the basketball program and the student-athletes he served throughout his tenure. "Coach Shaffer's commitment to Neosho County Community College has been evident from the moment he arrived on campus," Mullis said. "He poured countless hours into building a culture of accountability, excellence, and personal growth for our student-athletes. His impact extends far beyond wins and losses. He invested in the development of young men, represented our institution with integrity, and helped elevate our men's basketball program. On behalf of the Panther Family we wish Coach Shaffer and his family continued success."
