Game Recap: Baseball |

Panthers Swept by #11 Cowley at Home

The Neosho County Panther baseball team played host to the #11 Cowley College Tigers on Friday Afternoon, from Hudson Field. The Panthers fell twice to the Tigers in games 1 and 2 of the series, 8-5 and 16-10. The two losses send the Panthers overall record to 10-8 and 5-5 in KJCCC play.

Game 1:
Taylor Parrett toed the rubber for the Panthers in game #1 of the series against the Cowley College Tigers on Friday afternoon. The Panther righty was not as sharp as usual, tossing 3.0 innings, and giving up 6 runs, on 5 hits. Jordan Linderer also tossed 3.0 innings giving up 2 runs, on four hits for the Panthers. Brance Ware was a bright spot for Neosho County tossing a scorless inning in the 7th. The weak spot for the Panthers pitching wise was free passes. Neosho County gave Cowley 4 trips to first base for free in this ball game.

Offensively, the Panthers scored 5 runs on 8 hits. Three of the Panthers runs came on HR's, off of the bat of Luke Burk, and Mason Lundgrin. Strikeouts (13), runner's left on base (5), and non-productive outs were the Achilles heel of the Panthers offensively in this game. The Panthers scratched and crawled to stay in the game. However, the 6 spot for the Tigers in the top of the third inning, proved to be the nail in the coffin. Neosho went into the bottom of the 7th down by three and could not start a rally. Jordon Helm notched a multi-hit game for Neosho in this game. Cowley's Easley got the win on the mound and Taylor Parrett was given the loss in this contest.
Game 2:
Jack Ebright took the hill for the Panthers in game two of the doubleheader. The righty, who had been very good in his first couple of starts, struggled a little bit with the loaded Cowley lineup. Ebright tossed 5.1 innings, giving up 6 earned runs, and 11 hits. Tyler McQuinn, Nathan Hungate, Colten Nelson, and Brady Pacha all made an appearance on the mound for the Panthers in this game. Although there were a lot of crooked numbers, the Panthers stayed in the game, until the 8th inning. Hungate struggled finding the zone and gave up three free passes to load the bases for the Tigers with no outs. Nelson did his best to slow the Tigers rally, however, the Tigers ended up plating 3 in the inning to break the 10-10 tie, and take a 13-10 lead. These runs, plus some insurance runs in the top of the ninth, would be just what the Tigers needed to put away the Panthers and take the win.

Offensively, the Panthers managed to string together some hits and put up some crooked numbers of their own. Neosho County compiled 10 runs on 13 hits in game two. Drew Miller and Ivan Witt went deep to create some quick offense for the Panthers. Daegan Brady, Mason Lundgrin, Drew Miller, and Khalil Thrasher all notched a multi-hit game for Neosho. The Panther hitters matched the intensity of the Cowley lineup the entire game. They did a great job of finding a way to score when the Tigers did. Although the Panthers scored in double digits, they still left 10 runners in scoring position, and struck out 13 times in the game. Cowley's reliver Miguel Obeso did a great job of slowing down the Panthers offensively. He took the win and Hungate was given the loss.
Head Coach Steve Murry's thoughts on the games, "First of all, Cowley is a good ball club. It is no mystery why they are #11 in the Country. Although Cowley is a good team, I feel that we took ourselves out of two chances for a win today. We need to get better attacking opposing hitters. In both games, we put ourself in bad situations because of walks, hit batters, or allowing the Tigers to get into hitter's counts. We have some good arms on our staff, however, they are creating uphill battles for themselves by not getting ahead. Offensively, we need to cash in runner's in scoring position. We are getting on base...but are not finishing the job. Another concern is how often we are swinging and missing and striking out. We will put together a good day's work of practice tomorrow, and then get back after it on Sunday, in Ark City".
The Panthers will be back in action on Sunday, March, 28th, as they will head to Arkansas City, KS, to finish off their four game series with the Tigers of Cowley College.
