Last night, the Neosho Wrestling team competed against the number #1 ranked and defending National Champions, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M at Miami, OK. The N.E.O. squad dominated the dual match winning by a score of 44-3. There were some good matches, which is not indicated by the score. Winning the Panthers lone match of the night was 174 lb. red-shirt freshman
Jacob Walker. He finished a single leg takedown on the edge in sudden victory overtime to win 3-1. The next best matches for the Panthers came at 133 lbs. from red-shirt freshman
Alpha Diallo and 197 lb. sophomore
Josh Walker. Diallo lost a tight 4-2 decision which saw him take the lead with approximately 25 seconds remaining in the match only to give up an escape and takedown at the very end. And then at 197,
Josh Walker gave up a takedown and then eventually riding-time in the closing seconds to see a 1-1 tie go to a 4-1 loss. Both respectable losses and good efforts.
Next action for the Panthers will be at the 8
th Annual Kansas Cup hosted this year by Fort Hays State U. on Sunday, January 21st. This year this event will see 13 Kansas college wrestling programs competing and will grow to 17 next season. This includes all Kansas NCAA DII, NAIA, and NJCAA wrestling institutions. In the initial event eight years ago there were 7 college wrestling programs in the state of Kansas (2- NCAA DII, 2-NAIA, and 3-NJCAA). Of the 13 this season, there are still 2 NCAA DII, now 5 NAIA, and 6 NJCAA schools. Next season will see the addition of 2 more NAIA and 2 more NJCAA in-state programs.
