Dominquez’s Overtime Goal Lifts Panthers to Victory

Box Score CHANUTE, Kan. – Eastern Oklahoma scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation to force overtime, but Alejandro Dominguez goal in the 103rd minute helped Neosho improve to 2-1-0 on the year.

In the opening minutes, both teams appeared to be weighing out their opponent, searching for an advantage. After fifteen minutes, neither side could truly gain the advantage, though both sides had an occasional fast break attempt go awry.

Goal keeper Ryan Davis showed his stripes by sacrificing his body to save a dangerous looking attempt by Eastern Oklahoma. Moments later, excitement came in the twenty-eighth minute as Eastern Oklahoma again had a dangerous looking attack. The initial shot was dealt with by Davis, but he could not keep it in his possession. A short skirmish for a goal followed, finally ending with the Panthers clearing the ball out of bounds.

Patience for that golden opportunity paid off when Nelson Landaverde was fouled just outside of the keeper's box. On the ensuing free kick, Landaverde scored the first goal of the match in the thirtieth minute. The match would remain 1-Nil through the half.

The second half remained relatively uneventful, with both sides battling for ball control. The battle waged on until the sixty-third minute, when Landaverde cleverly placed a chipped ball just over the Eastern Oklahoma goal keeper to score his second goal of the night.

Eastern Oklahoma would gain their first goal in the eighty-second minute. The Panthers seemed to think the Mountaineer was off sides, which the line judge agreed with. However, the center official allowed the goal pushing the score to 2-1 in the waning minutes.

In the ninetieth minute, Eastern Oklahoma would launch a cross off of a free kick, hoping for the best. The ball seemed to linger, with the hopes of both teams on the line. In a mass panic, Eastern Oklahoma would score from a header way beyond the reach of Panther goal keeper Ryan Davis with only 42 seconds left on the clock. The goal sent the game into a golden goal sudden death overtime period.

The first overtime period would open with a quick attack from the Panthers ending in a save by the Eastern Oklahoma defense. The first ten minute period of overtime would go without a goal.

The second half of overtime began and nerves were evident for both teams. Neither team would be content with a tie. In the third minute of the second overtime period, the Neosho County Panthers would rally behind Alejandro Dominguez who would score the game winning goal three minutes into the final overtime period.

The Panthers win the match 3-2 and improve to 2-1-0 on the season. Look for the Panthers to defend their home field against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M on September 6 when they also host the gently used children's book drive.
