ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Neosho Panthers extended their win streak to a season long four games with a pair of road wins over the weekend. The trip began with a win over St. Louis Community College Saturday afternoon and concluded with a win in overtime over St. Charles Community College.
Sam Gavin scored the first two goals of his career and
Bridger Pretz earned the win in his first start of the season as Neosho (7-3-0, 3-1-0) picked up their third straight win Saturday afternoon over St. Louis Community College.
Gavin, a defenseman, scored his first goal of the season in the 12
th minute to give the Panthers an early 1-0 lead. That would be all the offense in the first half however and the Panthers clung to the 1-0 lead going into the half.
Aaron Crane would extend the Panther lead quickly after the half however. Crane's fourth goal of the season came in the 50
th minute and pushed the Panther lead to 2-0.
Gavin would once again find the back of the net just a few minutes later as his goal in the 54
th minute gave the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
St. Louis Community College finally got on the board but it would prove to be too little too late as
Bridger Pretz stopped three of the 4 shots he faced to earn his first win of the season.
Sunday afternoon the offense would prove much more difficult to come by however. St. Charles Community College held the Panthers just three shots on goal, their fewest the season opener when they were held to just two.
The Panther defense was up to the challenge as well as freshman keeper
Ryan Davis needed to stop only two shots to earn his fourth shutout of the season.
The two teams headed to overtime knotted at 0. It was the first overtime game for the Panthers since a 3-2 win in double overtime on Sept. 3.
Just five minutes in the Panthers would finally get a chance to put it away. After a St. Charles foul in the box,
Nelson Landaverde was awarded a penalty kick, the first of the season for the Panthers.
Landaverde, the Panthers leading scorer was up the challenge and his shot found the back of the net to lift Neosho to a 1-0 win and extend the win streak to four straight.
The Panthers are now 8-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 in Jayhawk Conference action. They will have a week to recover from the three game week they just concluded before returning home to host Coffeyville at 7pm Sunday (Oct. 5). The Red Ravens currently sit atop the Jayhawk Conference standing with a 4-0 mark while Neosho is in fourth at 3-1. A Panther win would vault them to the top of the standings with 12 points.
