Strunk’s Header Late Lifts Panthers Past Blue Devils

Box Score KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Aaron Strunk scored the game winning header off a set piece served up by Aaron Crane in the 84th minute to help Neosho to their third conference win in the last four games as they defeated Kansas City Kansas Community College 2-1.

As the women's game neared completion head men's coach Steven Harrison looked at the radar on his phone.

"It didn't look good at all. I thought there was no way we would be able to get our game in with the weather that was approaching."

A close lightning strike that forced the two women's teams off the field late in their match reinforced his fears but the KCK coaching staff assured him everything would be fine.

"They talked about the 'Tonganoxie Split' and sure enough the storm split and went right around us," said Harrison.

When the game finally got underway much later than it's originally scheduled 8pm start time the Panthers and Blue Devils struggled to get much going in the way of offense.

Nelson Landaverde scored his sixth goal of the season to give Neosho an early lead but the Blue Devils would tie it back up.

The Panthers had opportunities, but were unable to cash in as they managed to only convert two of their 11 shots on goal into points.

The game winner would come late after a Blue Devil foul. Aaron Crane served the ball up and Aaron Strunk's header found the back of the net for his second goal of the season to give the Panthers the lead and avoid overtime.

Ryan Davis earned the win in goal of the Panthers stopping four of the 5 shots he faced.

The Panthers improve to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in Jayhawk Conference play with the win. They will head out on the road over the weekend for a pair of games in the St. Louis area. Saturday they will take on St. Louis Community College before wrapping up the road trip with a game at St. Charles Community College on Sunday.
