Breanna Meyer's two out, two strike, two run homerun in the bottom of the 7
th forced extra innings and
Katie Todd's RBI single in the 8
th lifted Neosho past Labette 9-8 in the second game of a double header to help complete the sweep after taking game one 4-3.
Neosho (6-9, 2-0 KJCCC) swept Labette (6-9, 3-3 KJCCC) to open Jayhawk Conference play 2-0 for the first time since 2011. It was timely hitting that powered the Panther offense on a windy day in Chanute. For the day the Panthers combined to hit four homeruns including a pair of Meyer.
The Neosho offense started quickly against the Cardinals.
Sydney Hess blasted a two run homerun in the first to get the Panthers on the board.
Krissy Crow followed that up with a solo shot of her own later in the inning to put Neosho on top 3-0.
Labette would get on the board in the fourth with a three run homerun of their own to tie the game up.
Krissy Crow would come up big for the Panthers again in the 5
th when she drove in what proved to be winning run with a double to put Neosho on top 4-3.
Crow (3-2) picked up the win in the circle for the Panthers tossing 7.0 innings while allowing only 4 hits and 3 runs while striking out 8.
Game two would see both teams get going offensively. The Panthers once again jumped out to an early lead with a pair of homeruns in the first.
Katie Todd belted a three run shot for her first career homerun and
Breanna Meyer added a solo homerun to put Neosho on top 4-0.
The Panthers added two more runs in the second to extend the lead to 6-0. The Cardinals would respond with a seven run third inning capped by a grand slam to chase starting pitcher
Jessica Bluebird. Labette would add an insurance run in the fourth.
The Neosho offense would stay silent until the seventh when they would put together a rally. After Labette got two quick outs to open the seventh,
Krissy Crow singled to keep the inning alive.
Breanna Meyer then stepped to the play and belted a 1-2 pitch for her second homerun of the day to tie the game at 8. The Panthers would threaten to push the winning run across after a walk and single put two runners on but they would be stranded to force extra innings.
After a 1-2-3 top of the eighth inning, the Panthers would get a pair of runners on base after back to back errors on the Cardinals.
Katie Todd then delivered a walk off single to give Neosho the 4-3 win and compete the sweep.
Meaghan Thompson picked up the win in relief for the Panthers. Thompson tossed a season high 6.0 innings of work allowing 3 runs on 4 hits while striking out 1 to earn her second win of the year.
The Panthers will be back in action this weekend when they hit the road for a four game swing. They will take on Cloud County Community College (7-2, 2-2 KJCCC) Friday before traveling to Brown Mackie (4-10, 1-5 Region VI) Saturday. The next home game for the Panthers will be March 18 when the host Fort Scott Community College at 2pm.
