Region VI Men's Bracket
CHANUTE, Kan. – The Neosho Panthers 2013-14 regular season basketball schedule came to a close Wednesday evening as the Panther men and women dropped their final game to Coffeyville.
Â
The Region VI Playoff picture remained murky on both the men's and women's side until the final games of the Jayhawk Conference regular season came to a close. On the women's side, the Jayhawk East standings were pretty well set going in to the final game. The west, however, was a different story. The top and bottom of the standings were set when play opened Wednesday, but the 3-6 seeds were wide open.
Â
The men's standings were even more bunched up as the possibility for a four way tied existed in both the east and the west. When the dust settled that is exactly what happened as a four way tie for fourth in the east and a four way tie for third in the west had to be settled via tiebreakers.
Â
Neosho's women were one of the few teams on either the men's or women's side to know what their playoff matchup would be going in to the final game. The Panthers stayed within striking distance of Coffeyville most of the night, but the Ravens eventually pulled away for a 64-48 win. The loss dropped the Panthers record to 11-19 overall and 3-9 in Jayhawk Conference play to finish sixth in the east.
Â
The women will be the No. 7 seed in the East Region after Northwest Technical College received the 5
th seed. They will take to the road for their first round matchup when they travel to Liberal, Kansas to take on No. 20 Seward County Community College. The Saints finished second in the Jayhawk West with a 10-4 record in conference play and 25-5 overall. Â The Panthers and Saints were square off for a 6pm tip off ahead of Seward's men's game at 8:00pm. Live video and audio of the matchup will be provided thanks to Seward County. Â
The men entered Wednesday night's game looking to snap their two game losing streak. Much like the women's game, the game was close for much of the first half as the Panthers trailed by 3 at the break. A 13-2 run by Coffeyville midway through the second half stretched their lead out to 11 and the Panthers were never able to recover.
Â
Despite ending the regular season on a season long three game losing streak, the Panthers got some help to secure a first round playoff game. Neosho ended the regular season 20-10 overall and 4-8 in Jayhawk Conference play. The 4-8 record put them in a four way tie with Allen, Labette, and Cowley after Labette defeated Cowley on the final night and Independence held off Allen's upset bid. The Panthers 4-2 record against those teams they were tied with gave them the tie breaker and the fourth seed in the Region VI Playoffs.
Â
Saturday afternoon at 2pm the Panthers will host West No. 5 seed Garden City Community College. The Broncbusters were 22-8 overall and 8-6 in Jayhawk West play to finish in a four way tie for third. After the tie breakers were sorted out the Busters will now travel to Chanute for the first round matchup.
Â
The game will be available to watch live on the Panthers USTREAM Channel and Live Stats and Audio will be available on GoNeosho.com. Zoel Lopez will also have the play by play on Hot 105 and KKOY.com.
