Cavaliers sneak past Panthers in overtime

Box Score Friday night's matchup at the Chanute Sports complex featured two of the top teams in the Region 6 standings as well as two of the top goal scorers in the nation. On paper it looked like the game would be a shootout, but the game was anything but.

The Cavaliers got on the board in the first half with 27 minutes left to take a 1-0 lead. The two teams would go back and forth for the rest of the half, but neither team would put a ball in the net.

For most of the second half, it was the same story as both teams had opportunities but still failed to capitalize. The Panthers would finally get on the board with 12:30 left in the half on Matty Hodgson's free kick. David Bustos shook free for a header on Hodgson's cross to tie the game up.

Both teams would battle as the game got more and more physical but neither team could score sending the game to overtime.

In the overtime period, both teams came out aggressive looking to end it quickly. The Panthers and the Cavaliers both got looks early on, but it was Johnson's Jorge Rivero who put in the game winner with 7:58 left.

The Panthers fall to 7-2-1 on the year with the loss. They will be back in action Sunday when they take on Barton Community College. The Cougars currently are second in the region standings.
