Lady Panthers Softball Season Comes To An End

Saturday the 28th, the Lady Panther softball team hosted Brown Mackie for the first round of Regional's. The winner of the first round gets to advance onto the Regional Tournament in Topeka the following weekend, May 5th and 6th. Both games for the Lions and the Panthers were close ones but Brown Mackie pulled away with both wins to advance onto the Regional Tourney.

In game 1, Kyllie Sill the starting pitcher went the full seven innings only allowing 1 earned run of the 2 that were scored. In the first inning, it looked to be promising for the Panthers with Sill striking out the leadoff batter looking at an outside pitch. The second batter, however, reached on an error by Neosho's second baseman. With a misplayed fly ball to the right fielder the very next play, Brown Mackie's base runner would score. Neosho would be able to work themselves out of a jam that inning and with base runners at every base that inning, no one else would score. The next and last time Brown Mackie would score would be in the 3rd inning with a solo homerun by the leadoff batter. Neosho had a tough time getting the bats going the first game with the first two innings would be three up, three down. They would finally get the chance to score in the 5th inning with Kelsey Wilson reaching on a walk and advancing to 2nd base on a passed ball. Cortney Miller would register the RBI for the Panthers with a hit to Brown Mackie's shortstop, who would throw the ball away at first and Miller would reach second base on the error. With the tying run for Neosho on second base, Kiley Pedigo would be up the bat, but would end the inning with a fly out to deep left field. Neosho would threaten one more time, with Kaleena Castor leading off the 6th inning with a double but Castor and Foister would be stranded. In the bottom of the 7th, Neosho's last chance to win the game, Kelsey Wilson would fly out for the first out of the inning, Mackensie Sanders would hit for Kyllie Sill and would reach base on a hit by pitch. She would advance to second on Millers hit the third base. The last two outs of the game would be made by the third baseman ending game one, 2-1.

In order for the season to be able to continue, Neosho would have to win the second game to play the third game on Sunday but things didn't fall into place like they needed for that to happen. Neosho's offense would strike first, scoring 1 run in the 4th inning getting on top of the Lions 1-0. Starting pitcher Mary Ann Greer would throw a shutout game till the 5th inning when Brown Mackie would answer back and make the game 1-1 all. In the 6th inning, the Lions would catch up to Greer's pitches and would start stringing hits together. On three hits, the Lions would score 4 runs that inning before the Panthers shut them down, making the score 5-1. Neosho would answer back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th with Kelsey Wilson's two run homer over centerfield fence. This would pull the Panthers back within 2 runs of the Lions making the score 5-3. Kyllie Sill would enter the game in the 7th inning to finish out the game. She would face 4 batters before retiring the Lions. In the bottom of the 7th, the Panthers were not giving up just yet. Pedigo would leave off with a shot to third base but would get thrown out at first. Castor would reach base on an error by the right fielder putting the first base runner on the paths. Sanders would be up next and would get a single to left field, putting Castor at third and Sanders at first. Kassady Foister would step up next and would score Castor from third and would move Sanders to third base with a shot to deep left field. Foister would advance to second to put runners at second and third with only 1 out. Brittany Cooper would then be up to bat and with a great battle finally gets sat down on a strike three call. Kaitlin Wilson would step up for the last chance to score some runs. With the tying run on third and the winning run on second, Wilson battled for over 10 pitches, fouling off at least 6 pitches before flying out to deep left field to end the game. Brown Mackie would win 5-4 and continue their season at the Regional Tournament in Topeka May 5th and 6th. Neosho would end their season 17-28.
