The Neosho County Panthers traveled across the state of Kansas to take on the #6 Seward County Community College Saints for a Valentine's Day matchup.
The Panthers got off to an early 10-4 lead against the Saints with big shots coming from Calea Augustin,
Alexis Casher, and
Beth Hawkins. With her first 3 pointer of the game, Hawkins became the all-time leader in career threes made for Neosho County Women's Basketball. After the Panthers' quick start, Seward answered with a 15-2 run to finish the first quarter with a score of 19-12. The second quarter was all Saints with a huge 22-8 advantage, leaving the Panthers trailing 20-41 at halftime. It was more of the same in the third quarter, with the Saints posting 24 points to the Panthers 14. Finally, in the fourth quarter the Panthers showed more signs of life. After trailing by as much as 31, the Panthers cut the lead down to 19 at one point. Even with the 18-12 fourth quarter advantage, the Panthers fell 77-52.
DeQuandra Lyles led the Panthers in scoring with 14, followed by Calea Augustin with 8.
Alexis Casher and
Beth Hawkins each contributed 6 points. Casher led the way in rebounding with 8, followed by Erica Birch and Lyles with 5 each. Jaelyn Foster contributed 3 assists. Lyles, Shariah Smith, and Tricia Wattman each contributed multiple steals.
The Panthers (6-20 overall, 3-19 in conference) will travel to Colby (5-21 overall, 3-19 in conference) to take on the Trojans on Saturday at 4pm.
