CHANUTE, Kan. – An Allen goal in the 90
th minute of the men's game spoiled a Neosho shutout but the Panthers held on for a 2-1 win, but a corner kick in the 98
th minute dropped the women and prevented a second straight conference sweep for the Panthers.
The opening half of the women's match was uneventful as neither team was able to mount much offensively. The Panthers would, however, get on the board quickly in the second half to grab a lead. Savannah Moberly shot in the 51
st minute banged off the cross bar and rebounded directly to Jonnie Carson who put it back for her third goal of the season.
In the 70
th minute Leigh-Anne Bartlett scored to even the match up where it would stay through the end of regulation. It was Bartlett again in overtime who scored in the 98
th minute off a corner kick to lift the Red Devils to the win.
The women fall to 5-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play while Allen improves to 5-6, 2-4 with the win.
It was an almost instant offensive attack in the men's game that gave the Panthers a lead. In just the 2
nd minute
Josue Villalta found
Marcos Lucero for his team leading 7
th goal of the season. That would be all the offense either team could muster for the rest of the first half.
In the 53
rd minute
Josh Garcia corralled the ball after the Allen keeper's attempt to clear a ball from in front deflected to Garcia who found the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
Allen would spoil the Panthers shutout attempt with a goal in the game's final minute, but it would not be enough as the Panthers improved to 8-1-1 overall and 4-0-1 in conference play and the Red Devils fall to 2-7-1, 0-4-1.
Moussa Sy stopped all four shot attempts he faced in 78 minutes in goal including a crucial second half save off a one on one breakaway to keep the shutout intact.
With the game shifting from Iola to Chanute, the Panthers are now in the midst of a five game home stand. Next up is a home match with KCK on Saturday evening with kickoff set for 5pm and 7pm. The KCK men (5-2-0, 3-2-0) enter the match coming after a 9-2 win over Johnson County and are currently third in the KJCCC standings. The women (5-5-0, 2-4-0) are currently tied for 5
th in the conference standings.
Both matches could have big playoff implications. The men look to maintain their spot atop the conference standings as they try to capture another conference title. The women are searching to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2014 while KCK searches for the first ever playoff berth.
