The Neosho Athletic Department is pleased to announce the 2017 Hall of Fame class which will be enshrined at noon on Dec. 2 during a luncheon ceremony in the Oak Room inside the Student Union on the Neosho County Community College campus. The induction class of Harold Turner and Clifford "Par" Downing enshrines a pair of standouts on the basketball court whose contributions are still felt today.
Â
Harold Turner
Men's Basketball – 1967-69
Harold Turner, a Chanute native, was a standout on the court for the Panthers and later was a staple on the sidelines as a supporter for all of the Panthers teams. As a freshman, Turner helped guide the Panthers to a conference championship before falling to eventual NJCAA National Tournament participant Hutchinson Community College. The following year the Panthers would advance to the Region VI Tournament where he earned spot on the All-Tournament despite the Panthers being knocked out in the opening round. Turner would continue his basketball career at McPherson College where he averaged more than 20 points per game.
Â
Clifford "Par" Downing
Men's Basketball – 1989-91
Par Downing came to Neosho after a standout prep career at Atchison High School where he earned All-State honors as a senior. As a freshman Downing averaged 20.6 points which was the third most in school history. He would blow that total away as a sophomore as he averaged 27.4 points per game for a school record 823 points. Downing finished his career with a school record 1441 points (24.1 points per game) which still stands today. Following his standout career at Neosho, Downing would go on to Columbia University where he led the Lions in assists while averaging double figures over his junior and senior seasons.
