Panther baseball splits with Red Ravens

The Neosho County Community College baseball team split a doubleheader on Saturday with the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens, taking the season series three games to four. In game one, it was all Panthers as they run-ruled the visitors 11-1 in five innings.

 

All nine batters tallied at least one hit with Darian Abram and Nate Crossman each recording three. Abram jumps started the offense with a single in the bottom of the first. It was the first of four hits and two Coffeyville errors which led to three Panther runs. Neosho County also added at least one run in each inning. The Panthers big inning came in the fourth, added four runs to extend the lead to 10-1.

Crossman, Aaron Dees, Josh Norlin and Chad Thomas scored in the frame. In the fifth, Crossman picked up his third hit of the game and later scored the final run of the game on a hit by freshman Cooper Minnick. Sophomore pitcher Trent Latta went the distance, picking up his sixth win of the season while striking out five and limiting the Red Ravens to only three hits.

 

In game two, the teams combined for 35 runs on 35 hits and five errors. The Panthers had their eight-game winning streak snapped by a final score of 21-14. Coffeyville came out and hit a two-run home run and followed it up with a three-run home run in the first inning. Neosho County responded with three runs in the home half of the inning. Redshirt freshman Tanner Strickbine came on in relief in the second inning and held Coffeyville off the scoreboard in the frame. The Panthers took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second after plating four runs. It became a seesaw battle over the next few innings.

 

Coffeyville regained the lead in the top of the third, but the Neosho County offense wasn't done.The Panthers scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 12-9 lead heading to the fifth.The Red Ravens responded with seven more runs in next frame, and the visitors never surrendered the advantage for the remainder of the game. Connor Frazier took the loss, pitching 2/3 of the inning. He gave up four earned runs as part of Coffeyville's seven-run fifth inning. Offensively, Neosho County was led by Blake Tomasino who was 3-of-6 at the plate, including a home run. He scored three times and drove in two more runs.

 

The Panthers (35-6 overall and 18-6 in the KJCCC) will resume conference action on Thursday against Fort Scott (29-10 and 15-9) at Hudson Field. First pitch is set for 1 pm.

 

Schedule change:

Monday's scheduled doubleheader against Baker University was postponed until Wednesday due to the weather. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.
