The Neosho County baseball team took three of the four games from the Labette Community College Cardinals on Saturday and Sunday. After splitting the first two games on the road Thursday, the teams came to Chanute and racked up a lot of runs.
Â
In game one Saturday, the Cardinals plated 10 runs in the top of the first inning. Neosho countered with two in the first and then eight in the second. But it wasn't until the bottom of the fourth when the Panthers finally saw the lead. Leadoff batter Darian Abram hit a two-out triple to bring Neosho County within one run. Third baseman Brylie Ware tied the game at 16 with an RBI double, but the next batter, Evan Bourn broke the tie with a single, driving in Ware.
Â
The Panthers scored two more in the bottom of the sixth, while the pitching finally settled down and held Labette off the scoreboard over the final three innings. Craig Karnes picked up his first win of the season, while Drew Johnson earned his second save of the season. Offensively, the teams combined for 35 runs on 33 hits. Josh Norlin, Bourn, Ware and Abram all tallied three hits for the Panthers. A combined total of 12 pitchers were used in the game and due to daylight concerns, the fourth game of the series was pushed back to Sunday.
Â
Panther starter Trent Latta brought it on Sunday, pitching eight innings, striking out six and surrendering three earned runs in an 11-7 victory in a nine-inning contest. After two scoreless innings, the Cardinals broke the stalemate, but Neosho County responded with five in the bottom of the third inning. The Panthers maintained an 8-1 advantage until the top of the seventh when the Cardinals scored twice. Neosho would get those runs back in the bottom half of the inning and extend its lead by adding one more in the bottom of the eighth. However, in the top of the ninth, Labette tried to make things interesting, scoring four times. Johnson came on in the ninth to stop the bleeding.
Â
With the win, the Panthers are now 13-1 overall and 3-1 in the KJCCC.
Neosho County will host Johnson County (13-4 and 1-3) on Thursday. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 pm.
