Box Score 2 After last weekend, Neosho's offense had a lot of confidence. On Thursday, they continued to build that confidence by sweeping Highland Community College 12-1 and 11-6 in a conference doubleheader.
Highland got on the board in the top of the first inning of the first game thanks to an RBI double from leading hitter Justin Paul. From that point on, it was all Neosho, as they scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first, and never looked back. The 11 run outburst was highlighted by a 3 run homer from first baseman
Dylan Christie. The Panthers tacked on one more in the bottom of the third thanks to a solo homer from
Connor Goedert to make the score 12-1.
Matt Slauter got the win on the mound for Neosho, giving up 6 hits and 1 earned run in the run rule shortened contest. Christie finished with 5 RBI's, And Goedert and fellow sophomore
Andy Young added 2 RBI's a piece.
The second game again saw the Scotties get on the board first. Highland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a double from clean up hitter Sam Brooks. Neosho would answer in the bottom of the second and tie the score 2-2 thanks to an RBI double from
Craig Johnson and an RBI single from
Colby Smith. Highland would strike again in the third, taking a 5-2 lead after three complete innings. Neosho would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth, putting up 6 runs to take an 8-5 lead highlighted by a 2 run homer from
Dylan Christie. after Highland battled back to make the score 9-6,
Connor Goedert hit a 2 run homer in the bottom of the 8th to put the Panthers up 11-6.
Jake Johnson picked up the win on the mound for Neosho, and sophomore
Cody Hutchinson got the save throwing 3.1 innings in relief and giving up no earned runs.
Andy Young hit three doubles and drove in 2 for the offense, and Goedert and Christie added 2 more RBI's a piece.
The Panthers (28-6, 14-4 KJCCC) take to the road on Saturday as Highland (12-19, 5-13 KJCCC) hosts the second doubleheader of the four game series. The games begin at 1:00 P.M.
