Panthers Season Comes to a Close with Heartbreaking 1-0 Loss

TOPEKA, Kan. – One of the most successful seasons in school history came to a close with one long shot in the opening round of the Plains District Championship Thursday. Region V Champion Hill College (11-5-1) scored the game's only goal in the 35th minute to bring the Panthers postseason run to an end.

The Panthers entered the opening game of the Plains District Championship on an 11 match unbeaten streak while Hill entered the match unbeaten in their last 7. The Panthers had relied on defense all year but they came out in the opening half against the Rebels attacking offensively. Despite playing into a strong headwind, the Panthers got off 14 first half shots, only four were on goal however.

The Rebels only attempted a four first half shots, but they made the most of their limited attempts as one of their two on goal found the back of the net. The goal came in the 35th minute when Anthony Powell blasted a shot from more than 40 yards away. The shot appeared off target before curving just inside the post past Ryan Davis to give Hill the lead.

The second half would see Hill pack in their back line making good looks tough for the Panthers to come by. Often with as many as five men in the box helping Hill keeper Josh Nieto, Neosho attempted 14 shots, but all five that were on target were saved by Nieto.

Hill was effective turning their defense into offensive opportunities as Neosho continued to push more and more players forward to try and gain an advantage. Hill got off five shots on goal but Ryan Davis was solid, stopping all five.

The Panthers playoff run ends one game shy of the programs first trip to the NJCAA Men's Soccer Championship.
