Panthers earn 1-1 draw with Coffeyville

Own goal by Coffeyville helps Panther earn crucial point in 1-1 draw.

CHANUTE, Kan. – The Neosho Panthers (7-4-1, 3-3-1) attempted a season low six shots, only three of which were on goal, and Coffeyville (7-5-2, 3-4-2) attempted 18 shots but the Panthers found a way to earn a hard fought draw Sunday night.

Coffeyville's defense which had only allowed a Jayhawk Conference best 10 goals entering the match pressured Neosho and controlled the ball for much of the half. The Panthers came in to the match fourth in the conference with 37 goals scored, but could only get three shots off in the first half.

Despite the struggles offensively, the Panthers would get on the board first with a little help from the Red Ravens. After a foul on Coffeyville in the 26th minute, Taylor Hughes served a ball into the box that Coffeyville defender Palisa Chipendo attempted to clear with a header but it glanced off her past the reach of the Raven keeper to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

The lead would be short lived however as Chipendo would atone for the own goal as she put a well-placed shot by Neosho keeper Raysha Claibourn in the 36th minute to even the match.

Clairbourn and the Panther defense would tighten up their defense after the goal despite an aggressive game plan from Coffeyville. Claibourn would turn away three shots in the second period to send the game to overtime.

The first overtime saw Coffeyville with two great scoring chances but again Claibourn turned them away. Twice Coffeyville had break away attempts that Claibourn stopped. The first she saved cleanly, on the second she turned away the first attempt as before securing the put back attempt to keep the score tied and force a second overtime.

The Panthers could not get a shot off in either overtime while Coffeyville attempted, five of which were on goal and saved by Claibourn.

The Panthers currently are in fifth in the Jayhawk Conference standings with 11 points, just 1 point behind fourth place Allen and three back of Butler. They will host MCC-Maplewoods Thursday (Oct. 9) in a non-conference match before having over a week off to prepare for a key match with Dodge City on October 17.
