CHANUTE, Kan. – For the first time in the history of Neosho (12-3-0, 7-1-0)soccer, the men defeated Barton Community College (6-4-3, 4-2-2) to earn their first conference title since 2006 with a 1-0 win Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Panther offense didn't take long to get on the board as
Geo Alfaro drew a foul in the box setting up a penalty kick. For the second straight game and third time this season Landaverde stepped up and put away the penalty kick to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Neosho defense would make the one goal stand up as reining Jayhawk Conference keeper of the week
Ryan Davis stopped all six shots he faced to earn his seventh shutout of the season. Often forgotten this year, but no less important, is the back four of
Orsy Gonzalez,
Aaron Strunk,
Christopher Arce, and
Sam Gavin who have helped make Davis job easier with their outstanding defense.
Â
Davis continues to climb up the national leader boards with his play in goal. His seven shutouts are 3
rd in the nation, and he also ranks 10
th in both goals against average (0.70) and save percentage (.857) while his 11 wins are good for 13
th.
Â
The win clinches the Panthers first conference title since 2006 and is the first for
Steven Harrison. The win also puts the playoff picture in clear focus as Neosho will open the playoffs October 30
th when they host Region 6 No. 8 seed Northwest Kansas Technical College at 7:30pm. A Neosho win would secure a second home playoff game on November 2 against the winner of the 4 vs. 5 matchup.
Â
Before the Panthers can start their playoff preparation, they have one final regular season match, a road contest with rival Allen Community College (3-13, 2-6) Wednesday (Oct. 22) afternoon.Â
