Panthers season comes to an end in the District Championship

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Neosho County Panthers 30 wins this season was the most since 1994 when they won 50. They came up one win short of a trip to the NJCAA National Championship as they fell to Cowley in the District M Championship Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers opened up the District Tournament with a rematch against No. 13 Butler Community College. The Grizzlies beat the Panthers in straight sets in Chanute earlier this season. Saturday the Panthers would avenge the loss when it mattered most.

Neosho beat Butler in straight sets 26-24, 25-18, 25-17 to advance to the championship against host Cowley. Rosmerli Carrillo had her best match as a Panther as she finished with her 7th double double of the season while recording career highs for kills (16) and digs (16).

Genesis Mejias was also a force offensively for the Panthers as she finished with 11 kills while only committing 1 error to hit .455 for the match. Alexis Fulghum just missed double digit kills as she finished with 9 kills on 20 attempts with only 1 error as well.

Laura Broadfoot notched her second straight double double with 41 assists and 12 digs. Whitney Gifford once again led the Panthers in digs as she picked up 18 balls in the match.

Neosho knew they had their work cut out for them in the championship match. Cowley was playing on their home court, where they had not lost since 2008 and had won 60 consecutive matches. The Tigers would extend the streak to 61 straight as they took down the Panthers 25-15, 25-22, 25-16.

Cowley jumped all over the Panthers in the first and Neosho was never able to get the momentum on their side. For the match the Tigers were able to match every run that Neosho threw at them as they advanced to their fifth consecutive national tournament.

Carrillo once again led the Panthers with 11 kills despite hitting only .103. Alexis Fulghum hit a team best .389 as she tallied 8 kills on 18 attempts while committing only 1 error.

Whitney Gifford was outstanding for the Panthers as the sophomore libero averaged over 11 digs/set, as she finished with 34 which was a season high for a 3 set match.

Laura Broadfoot recorded another double-double with 33 assists to go with 10 digs. It was her team best 15th double double of the season and the 23rd of her career.

The loss brings the Panthers season to a close with a record of 30-7. The 7 losses are the fewest in the programs history.
