The Neosho County volleyball teamed opened Jayhawk Conference play on Wednesday when they hosted Coffeyville. It would be the second meeting of the two teams in less than a week as the Red Ravens knocked off the Panthers in the final game of the Neosho County Invitational on Saturday.
The Red Ravens would take the first two games before the Panthers battled back to force another game. The momentum wouldn't carry over however as the Panthers would drop game four and fall to 2-3 on the season.
Coffeyville 26, Neosho 24
The Panthers would jump out to an early lead in game one behind great hitting from
Yuleika Jimenez and
Shelby Ebarb. Just as Neosho started to go on a run, Panther captain
Shelby Ebarb would go down with an apparent knee injury. The Red Ravens would go on a run of their own to take the lead with Ebarb on the bench. The Panthers wouldn't go quietly however as the game would go back and forth. The Panthers could never completely get over the hump as Coffeyville would escape with the game 1 win. Jimenez led the Panthers with 6 kills the first set while Ebarb chipped in four kills and an ace before departing.
Coffeyville 25, Neosho 21
Game two would be another back and forth one, but once again the Panthers would find themselves on the short end. Freshman
Alexis Fulghum led the way with three kills, while
Yuleika Jimenez and
Tasha Wampler each provided 2. The Panther defense played well in the game as they came up with 31 digs, but it would not be enough.
Katie Jensen had 8 digs while Jimenez and
Whitney Gifford had 7 and 6 respectively.
Neosho 25, Coffeyville 18
Asya Herron would shuffle the lineup in game 3 and it paid off right away. The Panthers jumped out to a big league and never looked back as they cruised to the win forcing a game four.
Yuleika Jimenez supplied 6 kills in the set.
Whitney Gifford provided 6 digs, followed by
Katie Jensen with 5 while
Tasha Wampler had 2 solo blocks.
Coffeyville 25, Neosho 19
The momentum from their game three win would fade as Coffeyville took an early lead that the Panthers could never overcome.
Laura Broadfoot chipped in 9 assists while Gifford had two aces to go with 3 digs in the game. Fulghum and
Mollie Ravnikar each had three kills in the game.
The loss drops the Panthers to 2-3 on the year. The Panthers will be back in action September 5
th when they host the Labette Cardinals.
