The 2012 season was a record setting one for the Panther baseball team, so it is only fitting the 2012 Major League Draft was as well. Current Panthers
Adam Giacalone,
David Bote, and
Matt Strahm were all selected as well as former Panther Stephen Williams. It is the first time since 2006 when Boomer Potts was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in that a current Panther has been selected. The four selections is the most in a single draft in the programs history. The three curent Panthers were the first three players from a Kansas College to be selected and the only players from the Jayhawk Conference to be picked.
First baseman
Adam Giacalone was selected in the 16
th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers with the 515 pick overall. As a freshman he hit .396 while leading the nation with 102 RBIs and finishing with 18 homeruns. During his sophomore campaign, he picked up where he left off once again hitting .396 with a team leading 12 homeruns, 25 doubles, and 59 RBIs. Giacalone also had an impressive career on the mound for the Panthers as his 18 wins and 179.0 innings pitched are also school records. Giacalone also threw two of the most dominant games in school history. As a freshman he set the single game record for strikeouts when he fanned 17 Fort Scott hitters in a win. He topped that performance as a sophomore when he threw the fifth no-hitter in school history facing only one over the minimum. Giacalone currently owns 12 single season or career records. He was twice named the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference First Baseman and Pitcher, First Team All-Region First Baseman, Second Team All-Region Pitcher. As a freshman he was also named the Freshman of the Year as well as being named a First Team All-American, an honor which he is expected to earn again this season. Giacalone signed a letter of intent in the fall with the University of Tennessee.
Freshman shortstop
David Bote was selected in the 18
th round of the draft by the Chicago Cubs with the 554 pick overall. Bote who transferred to Neosho County from Liberty University at the semester break was the team's leading hitter as he posted a .419 batting average. His 83 hits are the fifth most for a single season in school history. He also led the team with 61 runs scored, 6 triples and 20 stolen bases while finishing second to Giacalone in homeruns, doubles, RBIs, Slugging Percentage, and On Base Percentage. Bote was an Honorable Mention All-Conference shortstop this season.
Matt Strahm was selected by the Kansas City Royals with their 21
st pick and the 643 pick overall. The lefty from West Fargo, North Dakota rewrote the pitching record books during his two years at Neosho County.As a freshman Strahm posted a 9-3 record with a 2.82 ERA while striking out 77 in his 67.0 innings of work. He led the team with two shutouts and 9 complete games. As a sophomore his numbers would only improve as he would post another 9-3 record while lowering his ERA to 1.48. He once again led the team in complete games as he tossed 11 to go with a school record three shutouts. Strahm's 99.0 innings pitched were also a school record. He led the NJCAA with 129 strikeouts which was also a school record. Strahm is the school's All-Time leader with a 2.02 career ERA, a career WHIP of 1.16, 206 career strikeouts, and 20 complete games while his 18 career wins is tied with Giacalone for the school record. Strahm earned First Team All-Conference honors twice and was First Team All-Region as a sophomore and Second Team All-Region as a freshman. Strahm signed a letter of intent to the University of Nebraska.
Stephen Williams who pitched for the Panthers in 2011 was selected in the 16
th round by the Boston Red Sox. Williams pitched at Seminole State College in 2012.
