Game 2 Box Score
As freshmen,
Adam Giacalone and
Matt Strahm anchored a pitching staff that set a school record for wins, strikeouts and ERA. On Saturday the duo took the mound for the first time as sophomores and didn't disapoint the Panther fans.
Strahm got the start in game one and the lefty who led the team in complete games as a freshman added one more to his resume with a complete game shutout. Although he was not as sharp as usual, Strahm allowed only one hit over his seven innings of work while striking out 14. The only hit he allowed came in the second inning when an 0-1 pitch was rolled through the left side of the infield.
The Panthers needed Strahm to be sharp on the mound as they only managed to push across one run. After a one out single by Garret Schaede and a walk to
Tyler Palmer,
Kas Sanders would hit into what appeared to be an inning ending double play. The Lions would fail to convert however, and when the throw to first sailed wide, pinch runner
Robbe Ewing would plate the Panthers only run of the game.
After a two out walk by Strahm in the bottom of the seventh,
Tyler Palmer would gun down a would be base stealer to end the game, and give Strahm his first win of the season.
The story of the day would come in Game 2 of the double header as
Adam Giacalone would face one over the minimum on his way to his first collegiate no hitter. As a senior in high school, Giacalone tossed a pair of perfect games at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School. Giacalone was an equal opportunity pitcher on the day as he recorded five outs each by way of the strikout, ground out, and flyout.
After struggling to score runs in Game 1, the Panthers would jump on top right away in game 2 thanks to three walks and a hit batter in the first inning.
Kas Sanders had the big hit of the inning when his two out single drove in a pair of runs.
The Panthers would tack on one more in the second to push the lead to four as Giacalone would help his cause with an RBI single to plate
Robbe Ewing.
Garrett Schaede led off the third inning with a double to get the inning started. The Panthers would plate four runs on five hits in the inning to extand their lead to 8-0 which was more than enough for Giacalone who worked around his lone baserunner in the fifth inning to close out the run rule victory.
The win moves the Panthers to 4-0 on the season while Brown Mackie falls to 0-2. The teams will be back in action tomorrow with first pitch of the double header coming at 1:00pm.
