One day after a pair of run-rule wins over Brown Mackie, the Panthers were back in action against the defending NJCAA National Champion Reivers from Iowa Western. Iowa Western came in to the game ranked 10
th in the latest NJCAA national poll. Neosho County picked up the win in game one of the double header by a score of 4-2 before falling in game two 10-11.
Freshman Daniel Peterson picked up right where the pitching staff left off the day before, picking up the complete game win while needing only 69 pitches. Peterson allowed 6 hits and walked one while allowing only 2 runs, both of which were earned. Freshman Adam Giacalone also continued his hot start at the plate going 3-3 with 2 more RBI's to add to his season total. Tyler Palmer's fifth inning two out double down the left line drove in a pair of runs to put the Panthers on top for the first time in the game. Giacalone would add an insurance run in the sixth with another two out RBI and it would be all the offense Peterson needed.
Game two would not start out well for the Panthers. Adam Giacalone was roughed up in his first start on the mound allowing 7 runs 1 1/3 innings of work. The Reivers would take on 4 more runs in the third inning capped by a two out three run homerun from Damek Tomscha.
Four Panther relievers would hold the Iowa Western scoreless over the final four innings as the offense began to chip away at the lead. A pair of runs in the third followed by single runs in the fourth and fifth innings would cut the Reiver lead to seven. Eric Dawson and Austen Colt would lead off the seventh to get the Panther rally started. Garrett Schaede would drive in a pair of runs with a double to cut the lead to 4. Alec Naifeh's three run homerun with two outs would pull the Panthers within a run, but that would be the final run for the Panthers.
The Panthers move to 3-1 on the season with the split while Iowa Western goes to 3-5. Neosho County will be back in action Wednesday February 23 as they travel to Neosho, MO to take on the Riders of Crowder College. Crowder is currently receiving votes in the latest NJCAA poll.
