Panthers Lose In Overtime Thriller to #3 Coffeyville

Chanute Kansas - Neosho entered last night's game looking to do something only two other teams had done this season, and that's take down the #3 Coffeyville Red Ravens. Coffeyville entered the game 26-2 overall and 17-1 in conference. Against those odds, the Panther squad went toe-to-toe with the Ravens for forty-five gritty minutes. For the Panther's final regular season home game, head coach Jeremy Coombs went to his five sophomores for one last start in front of their home crowd. The Ravens would strike first with a three ball from Marvin Johnson, but the Panthers would take control from there as they would strike back with a flurry of threes. The Panthers would build a lead as large as 15 points with 7:32 left in the first half. The Ravens wouldn't go away as they made a run of their own off several forced turnovers by the Panthers. Coffeyville would eventually cut the Panther's lead to 6 points at the midway mark. "I thought we did a good job attacking their press and taking care of the ball." Head Coach Jeremy Coombs said. "But honestly our defense was what got us the lead going into half."

Conventional wisdom would suggest that Hall of Fame coach Jay Herkelman would re-group his Ravens and have them ready for a second half run. That is exactly what he did. The Panthers would strike first, but the Ravens would quickly make a run that gave them a one-point lead just 4 minutes into the second half. The Panthers would keep the pressure on the Ravens with their trapping defense, but it was the Ravens who got to the free-throw line 33 times knocking down 24 freebies to the Panthers 18 free-throw attempts. "I was very proud of our guys with the way they battled from start to finish." Coombs Said. "It didn't matter what happened in the game, the guys stuck together and never stopped fighting."

The Panthers found themselves down 10 points with just 2:06 left in the game, but didn't stop fighting. Neosho would put together several stops and behind a mirage of threes from Brian Tolefree and Magic Reliford the Panthers would push the game into overtime.

In overtime the Panthers would cool off and Coffeyville would get hot from the free-throw line allowing them to pull off the 105-95 overtime victory.

Neosho will now hit the road for their last two conference games. Wednesday evening the Panthers will travel northwest to Cloud County and then on Saturday they wrap-up conference play at Allen County. "These last two games are very important if we want to host a first round playoff game." Coombs said. "It won't be easy, but if we play with same toughness, we did against Coffeyville it will give us a chance to give our fans one last chance to see us play here in Chanute."
