Panther Softball Goes 1-3 Over Busy Weekend

Chanute, KS -  The Neosho County Community softball team had a busy weekend with four games in two days against three opponents.
On Saturday, the Panthers fell 6-0 and 11-4 to Connors State (Okla.) College.
In game one, a pair of doubles allowed Connors State to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The visitors later added two in the third and one in the fourth. The final three runs came courtesy of solo home runs. Meanwhile, Connors State limited Neosho County to only a pair of hits by Kinsley Stewart and Saige Vandiver.
In the second game, Connors State, once again, jumped out to a quick 5-0 advantage and set sail for a six-run victory. Down 9-0, Taylor McGuire got the Neosho County offense with a single. Two batters later, Katelynn Stucky drove in McGuire with a two-run home run. Neosho County added two more runs in the fourth, but it proved to be the final runs of the game for the Panthers. McGuire went 3 for 3 on the day, while Stucky went 2 for 3.
On Sunday, it was Neosho County who struck first against Jefferson College (Mo.) in the bottom of the second. In her only hit of the game, Sierra Spurlock drove in the game's first three runs with a home run.  However, the lead was short-lived as Jefferson College responded with four in the top of the third. The score remained 4-3 until the visitors plated four more in the top of the sixth. In the home half of the sixth, Sydnie McClelland in her only at-bat of the game, smacked a two-run home run over the outfield fence to bring the Panthers back within three.
Libby Horton and Taylor Stepp registered three hits each in the loss.
In the final game of the weekend, the Panthers picked up their second win of the season 14-10.
The Neosho County offense tallied 20 hits in the win, including four from Spurlock, three from McGuire, Stucky and Vandiver and two from Shelby Wood and Ashlyn Riley. Northeast (Neb.) Community College jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead but Neosho County responded with two runs in the first and two in the second to tie the game. Then in the third, Stucky connected for a solo home run and later in the inning Spurlock hit a two-run blast to give the Panthers a 9-4 advantage. It was a lead that Neosho County never surrendered as both teams added at least one run in each half inning through the remainder of the game.
The Panthers (2-6) were scheduled to face Labette Community College (0-8) on today in their conference opener, but due to concerns with the weather, the doubleheader was pushed back to Thursday in Chanute. First pitch is set for 2 pm.
