Chanute, KAN. – The Neosho County men and women both picked up crucial conference wins over Coffeyville Saturday night. The women battled back from an early 2-0 deficit to pick up a 3-2 win and move into sole possession of third place in the conference standings. The men clipped the Ravens 3-1 to maintain their lead in the conference standings.
The women entered their match tied with Coffeyville in the conference standings. It was the Ravens that jumped out to an early lead with a goal in just the 5
th minute. They would extend the lead to 2-0 with another goal in the 28
th minute.
Savannah Moberly's first career goal with five minutes left in the first half cut the lead to 2-1. Moberly would later tie the game up in the 64
th minute on a penalty kick.
DaNisha Brown would give the Panthers their first lead of the match in the 83
rd minute.
Autumn Wilson posted eight saves to pick up the win as the Panthers improved to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
Despite the 3-1 final, the men's game was tight for much of the night. After a scoreless first half, it wasn't until Marcos Lucero's goal in the 62
nd minute that either team could get on the scoreboard. The lead would be short lived, however, as Coffeyville scored in the 70
th minute to tie the game up. The Panthers would respond right away as their goal just one minute later gave them the lead back. In the 74
th minute that would add an insurance goal off of a penalty kick to extend the lead to 3-1. Moussa Sy recorded four saves in 83 minutes in goal and Franklin Mendez stepped in for the final seven minutes as the duo combined for the win. The Panthers improve to 7-1-1 on the season and 3-0-1 in conference play to remain atop the standings.
The men and women will travel to Iola Wednesday afternoon to take on the Allen Community College before returning home Saturday. The women will kick off against the Red Devils (4-6, 1-4) at 2pm. The men's game will follow at 4pm. Allen's men enter the game 2-6-1 overall and 0-3-1 in conference.
