Neosho Wrestling Headed West to Compete after Thanksgiving Break

Colby/Hays, KS- This past weekend, Neosho wrestling headed west to matchup against West/Central District and Jayhawk conference competitors, Colby Community College on Friday, then competed in the always tough, Fort Hays State Open on Saturday.  Friday's action saw the Panthers battle in a tough 27-21 loss to Colby, where the team score was 21-24 going into the last match. Neosho's 285 lb. wrestler ,Nick Carson, had some pressure on him going into the last match with the team down 24-21. It was about as close as a bout can be with the Colby's Gabriel Ledesam, winning 4-3 and sealing the win for Colby."  Both teams had two forfeits, and Colby got the edge by winning four out of the six bouts wrestled. Cole Franklin recorded the only fall/pin of the night sticking Colby's 157 lb wrestler in the first period.  The other win by a Panther came from Randle Crowley at 149 by a score of 2-1. "Our guys overall handled it well considering everything that happened right before Thanksgiving break, making weight and competing after a break, and being able to respond after all that travel. Crowley pulled out a close win and Franklin continues to pin people", said Coach Petterson. "

The Panthers then traveled back to Hays on Friday night, and competed in the Fort Hays State Open on Saturday.  With no placers on the day, there were two wrestlers who recorded even win/loss records.  Those were freshmen Antonio Salinas at 133 lbs. and Aaron Lewis at 285 lbs.  Others recording wins were Sophomore Jay Maxville (125),  Sophomore Mateo Soto (149), and Sophomore Josh Walker (197). "During Fort Hays Open on Saturday, we didn't have a lot to go our way in a tough tournament with some tough draws. I liked what I saw out of Salinas and Lewis, and I liked how nearly all of our guys fought hard until the end. We did see some strides forward and I think we continue to improve." said Coach Petterson. Next action for the Panthers will be this Friday at home against NJCAA West/Central District foe Wentworth Junior College. The dual is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm.
