Thursday night is an unusual night for a game in the Jayhawk Conference. Last night the Panther Women's Basketball Team played the lone game in the conference when they hosted the Missouri Valley Vikings. If the Thursday night game wasn't unusual enough, the game was scheduled to have a 5:30pm tip time but, due to a mishap the officials for the game arrived late and the actual tip time was not until about 6:30pm. The slow start to the game did not affect the Panthers as they came out and built an early 17-1 lead on the Vikings. The Vikings didn't travel all the way to Chanute to just lie down and give the Panthers a win. The Vikings lead by a balanced scoring attack began to chip away at the early deficit but the Panthers still lead 23-11 at the end of the 1
st quarter. The Panthers struggled in the second quarter with the Vikings balanced scoring as the Vikings won the quarter 15-14. But the Panthers were able to keep their distance by forcing turnovers and getting easy baskets. The Panthers took a 37-26 advantage into the halftime break. The 3
rd quarter was a bit of a back and forth battle between the two teams. The Panthers were able to continue their push by attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line. The Panthers, who finished 26 of 34 from the charity strip, shot a season high 76.5% from the line to keep the lead after 3 quarters 58-43. The 4
th quarter was the stage for one last push by the Vikings, as Devon Collins hit 3 of her 6, 3 point baskets in the 4
th quarter. It wasn't enough as the Panthers finish off the Vikings 75-60. Three Panthers scored in double figures,
Kascity Martin finished with 19, Brook Neal with 12, and
Ki'Asha Harris with 14. Harris also added 8 rebounds to her stat line. The Panthers will travel to Coffeyville for their next Jayhawk Conference match up on Saturday at 5:30pm. Then the Panthers will be home again on Monday as the host rival Allen County at 5:30pm.Â
