Panthers come up short in upset bid against No. 22 Cowley

Box Score CHANUTE, Kan. – The Neosho Panthers bid to upset No. 22 Cowley fell short as a 6-1 run in the game's final minutes propelled them past the Panthers 66-61.

After Cowley opened the game with six straight points but Neosho responded with seven straight points of their own to grab the lead. The Panthers led for much of the first half and took a 26-25 lead to the lockers at halftime. Neosho held Cowley to just 21% from the field and only 15% from three in the opening period, but the Tigers went 11 of 12 from the line to keep themselves in the ball game.

In the second half the teams would trade the lead back and forth with neither team leading by more than four points until Cowley's run in the final minute. Ashley Grant's jumper with 4:05 to play tied the game up, but four straight free throws by Cowley gave them the lead for good.

The Panthers would hold Cowley without a field goal over the final 6:30, but Cowley would score their final 13 points from the line to escape with a 66-61 win.

Ashley Grant scored 21 to lead the Panthers, but was forced to take 26 shots on the night. Grant, who is among the Region VI leaders in free throw attempts, only got to the line four times on the night. Danel Stithem and Madigan Gonzales each finished with 9 for the Panthers in the loss.

Neosho will be back in action Wednesday (Feb. 19) evening when they travel to rival Allen Community College at 6:00pm. The Panthers will be looking to snap their season long six game losing streak and to sweep the season series with the Red Devils.
