Box Score The Neosho County Panthers regular season came to a close Thursday (Feb. 28) evening as they fell to the Cowley Tigers 70-44. The finished the regular season 10-20 overall and 6-12 in Jayhawk Conference play.
Needing a win to secure a home playoff game in the first round of the Region VI playoffs, the Panthers struggled in the first half digging a hole they would not be able to get out of. The Tigers forced Neosho County 19 first half turnovers on their way to a 40-13 halftime lead. Cowley put the game out of reach with a 25-3 run.
Neosho County would play better in the second half as they would outscore the Tigers 31-30 in the second half, but they would not be able to overcome the big deficit. For the night the Cowley would force the Panthers into 26 turnovers which they turned into 27 points.
Alexis Hafenstein led the Panthers in scoring with 16 points including 4-6 from behind the three point line. For the game the Panthers were held to just 28%(14-50) shooting from the field despite shooting 41%(7-17) from behind the arc.
The loss drops the Panthers to the 5 seed in the Region VI Eastern Division standings. They will face Cloud County Community College who is the 4 seed from the Western Division. The Thunderbirds finished the regular season 20-10 overall and 10-6 in conference play. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
