Comeback effort comes up short as Panthers fall to Pratt

Box Score Pratt opened the ballgame on a 14-2 run and then held off a pesky Panther team to improve to 8-0 on the season.

The Panthers came out cold to start the ballgame against the leading scoring team in the Jayhawk West. The Beavers jumped out to an early 14-2 lead before Neosho was able to get much going on the offensive end.

Neosho would eventually chip away at the Pratt lead with an 8-2 run, but Pratt answered back with an 18-2 run of their own to pull away.

Pratt shot nearly 60% from the floor in the first half as they connected on 19 of 33 shots en route to a 48-28 first half lead. The 48 first half points were the most allowed so far this season by the Panthers.

The second half started out much like the first as Pratt continued their hot shooting and pushed the lead out to as many as 23 at 61-38 before the Panthers fought their way back.

Back to back three point plays from Daryane Yarbrough and Ashley Grant got the Panthers back within 11. Ashely Grant then stepped to the line with a chance to cut the lead to single digits, but missed both of her free throws and Pratt answered back with a run of their own.

Danel Stithem put the Panthers on her back over a two minute stretch midway through the half as she knocked down a three followed by a steal and a long jumper. One trip later it was a step back three that pulled Neosho within 12 but Pratt would again answer back.

For much of the rest of the half Pratt's would keep the Panthers at arm's reach. The lead would fluctuate from 12-15 for most of the final 6 minutes before a three by Pratt's Maddie Pendry extended the lead to 18 with 55 seconds left.

The hot shooting first half by the Beavers would prove too much to overcome however.

Ashley Grant scored a game high 21 points for the Panthers along with a team high 9 rebounds in the losing effort. Danel Stithem added 17 points to go with 4 steals while Danielle Randle finished with 14 to round out the double figure scorers.

Neosho will be back in action Saturday (Nov. 16) at 5:30 when they host Barton Community College. The Cougars fell to Allen Community College  79-69 in the opening game of the Neosho Hoops Classic.
