Lady Panthers pick up come from behind victory
“That one feels good, real good,” exclaimed Head Coach Kelley Newton following a 55-52 victory over the Kansas City Kansas Community College Lady Blue Devils on Saturday night.
With 15:29 remaining in the game, things were looking bleak for the Lady Panthers who found themselves in the middle of a 15-3 KCK run and were down 39-24.
Momentum would start to shift toward Neosho County following the under 10 minute media timeout.
Neosho County freshman
Shanice Palmer would nail a deep two to cut the Lady Blue Devil lead to eight with 9:33 left in the game.
With the score sitting at 43-35, the Lady Panthers would step up their defensive pressure and force eight straight Lady Blue Devil turnovers.
“That was a testament to the girls making a decision”, said Newton. “They stepped up and did everything we taught them.”
The Lady Panthers would capitalize off those turnovers, and with 3:04 left,
Amanda Laurenceau would knock down two free throws to give the Lady Panthers a 44-43 lead. That lead would be Neosho County's first lead since the early part of the game when
Ashley Gorman knocked down a jumper giving the Neosho County a 4-2 lead.
The win improves the Lady Panther record to 3-11 in the KJCCC East and 4-22 overall.
“This game is a testament of their character and shows they wanted it,” said Newton. “This team has not given up!”
The Lady Panthers were led in scoring by
Autumn Zenon with 19 and
Shanice Palmer added 13. Kayla Crowley was the only Lady Blue Devil in double figures with 16.
The win also gives the Lady Panthers the regular season sweep over the KCK Lady Blue Devils.
Neosho County will travel to Fort Scott, KS to take on the Lady Greyhounds on Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm.
