Panthers claim one place winner at UCM Open

Final Brackets

The Neosho County wrestling team faced one of their toughest tests of the young season over the weekend at the University of Central Missouri Open. The tournament saw the Panthers facing off with wrestlers from many NCAA Division I and Division II schools. Tim Prescott was the lone Panthers to place as he finished 5th at 125 pounds.

"We ended the day with an overall 26-28 win-loss record which is pretty good considering the competition level," commented head coach Wayne Petterson. "Our guys battled hard, and again we came away with some positive reinforcement of some of the things we've been emphasizing. We also good some good breakdowns of things we need to correct or get better at."

Tim Prescott posted a 6-2 record for the meet. Prescott picked up a decision in his first match before falling 8-5 to Malacai Collins of Central Missouri. He would bounce back and win his next four matches with two pins and a major decision along with a decision. His next match was against Oklahoma State's Eli Hale who was wrestling unattached. Hale picked up a 5-2 decision, but Prescott bounced back and won his match for 5th place 8-4.

"Tim lost early in a match that he probably should have won, but then he came back and showed much better consistency rattling off a 5-1 record in the backside against DI and DII people."

Freshman Alex Shea also had a good showing for the Panthers as he posted a 5-2 record, coming up just short of placing. His two losses on the day came to James Krischke of Missouri who was wrestling unattached. Shea was dominant the rest of the day however as four of his 5 wins came from pins.

"Alex showed some very good results from his consistent work ethic. He is making big strides in improvement and we really like what he is doing."

The Panthers also had three other wrestlers who lost close matches in the quarterfinals that kept the Panthers from having as many as five wrestlers place at the open.

"We lost some tight matches in both the front and back side quarters that really determined us only having one placer. Those are huge rounds that we now have to work on getting through. We lost some very close matches against really tough competition but it doesn't get any easier next weekend. We will be facing the likes of Iowa, Oklahoma State, Missouri, and Illinois to name a few. This is where they get their shot at the big time guys which is why many of our wrestlers came here."

The Panthers next action will be Saturday (Nov. 23) when they travel to St. Charles, Missouri just outside of St. Louis for the Joe Parsi Open at Lindenwood University.
